North American Green Makes
Product Selection Easy

North American Green’s erosion solutions specialists are specially trained to provide assistance with your design or selection of the most effective erosion control or turf reinforcement solutions available.

North American Green’s research and extensive experience has also been compiled into Erosion Control Materials Design Software (ECMDS®) to assist you in product selection.

Erosion Control Materials Design Software

North American Green’s Erosion Control Materials Design Software (ECMDS®) Version 4.3 provides computer-assisted selection of materials for slope erosion protection and channel scour resistance. ECMDS is a necessity for every engineer, designer, or contractor who must comply with today's strict erosion and sediment control regulations.

Overview

ECMDS Software
-Design Using the Vmax3 Series of TRMs
-Includes Slope, Channel, and Vegetation Modules
-Supported by Windows
-English or Metric Units
-Choose Your Language: English or Spanish
-Offered on CD-ROM, Internet access (setup as link to request form) or download (21 meg file) at nagreen.com
-Includes installation CAD diagrams
-Updated Reference Manual
-Complete package is Free of Charge!

Recommendations within ECMDS are based on data from laboratory and field research involving erosion control blankets, turf reinforcement mats, vegetation, TRM reinforced vegetation, and riprap. ECMDS utilizes the most advanced design procedures developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to provide performance guaranteed recommendations for all North American Green products.

English or System International (metric) units may be selected for input parameters and output data or values may be converted once entered.

Output from an individual analysis in the Slope or Channel Modules may be printed or saved to files for future reference and editing. ECMDS also provides viewable and printable back-up computations to support the analysis output.

By providing assistance with both temporary and permanent erosion control materials and vegetation selection, ECMDS will ensure design protection for your site from start to finish. If you have questions, there’s also an in-depth, searchable reference manual that can be viewed on-screen or printed. You can also call North American Green Technical Services with any questions.

Slope Protection Design

Slope OutputLarger View
-Soil loss calculations based on the RUSLE
-Failure criteria based on tolerable soil loss
-Analysis of single reach or segmented slopes
-Includes rainfall factors for the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Latin America and other countries
-Print or save Performance Specifications after running an analysis

The ECMDS package advances engineering design of erosion protection for slopes far beyond other recommendation systems. The Slope Protection Module is the first performance-based selection system ever developed for rolled erosion control products.

The program takes into consideration site parameters including slope gradient, slope length, soil type and erodibility, vegetation type and density, and regional precipitation distribution data, for analyzing a proposed material’s performance on a specified slope.

Dependable soil-loss calculations were obtained through procedures and equations from the USDA’s Agriculture Handbook #703 "Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE)" are used for material evaluation and erosion control analysis. Erosion control materials include all North American Green erosion control blankets, mature vegetation, and mature vegetation reinforced with the Vmax3 composite turf reinforcement mattings (SC250, C350, and P550) or the P300.

Channel Protection Design

Channel InputLarger View
Channel OutputLarger View
-Utilizes design procedures from the FHWA’s HEC 15 and the USDA’s AG HBK 667.
-Failure criteria based on lining degradation and soil loss
-Facilitates use of 3 Phase Design Analysis
-Accounts for differing vegetation growth habits and densities
-Accounts for differing soil erodibility factors
-Analyzes channel bends and composite linings
-Analyzes TRM performance with a wide range of vegetation types
-Vmax3 TRMs allow for the use of vegetation as an alternative to riprap in channels exposed to shear stress of 14 lbs/ft2 (672 Pa)

The Channel Protection Module utilizes calculations from Federal Highway Administration's Hydraulic Engineering Circular #15 (HEC 15) "Tractive Force Procedure" and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Handbook #667 (AG HBK 667) "Design Method for Grass-Lined Open Channels".

ECMDS provides accurate channel hydraulics and stability analysis of lining materials such as North American Green’s rolled erosion control products (RECPs), vegetation, and riprap. The program enables effective analysis of these materials in both straight and curved channel reaches.

The Channel Protection Module integrates a highly advanced procedure for designing geosynthetically reinforced vegetative channel linings called the 3 Phase Design System. The 3 Phase Design System analyzes erosion control and reinforcement functions of North American Green’s Vmax3 products or P300 erosion control/turf reinforcement mattings through each development phase (unvegetated, partially vegetated, and fully vegetated) of the vegetative lining. The 3 Phase Design System allows a complete check of channel hydraulics and lining stability through each phase, assuring the development of a permanently stable reinforced turf channel lining using the Vmax3 composite turf reinforcement mats (C-TRMs) or P300.

Vegetation Selection

The Vegetation Module of ECMDS utilizes site specific information such as location, soil type, moisture regime, and planned site maintenance to provide a list of adapted grasses and legumes with corresponding seeding rates, as well as growth habits (bunch and sod forming) and longevity for each species. ECMDS assists designers in selecting vegetation species well adapted to their site’s environmental conditions and erosion control needs.

Once a suitable product(s) is/are selected within the Slope or Channel Modules, ECMDS provides material specifications in a variety of formats. Standard material, Supplemental, Construction Standards Institute (C.S.I.), Performance, and Project specifications are included in text files accessible for viewing, printing, and in some cases editing for inclusion in complete project specifications.
